Hyderabad is home to three central universities - English & Foreign Languages University, Maulana Azad National Urdu University and University of Hyderabad, eight state universities and two deemed universities, making it a well-known seat of learning in southern India. Also based in and around the city are renowned institutes of higher education such as ISB Hyderabad, NIFT Hyderabad, IHM Hyderabad, IIT Hyderabad, Institute of Public Enterprise and the National Academy of Legal Studies & Research (NALSAR). The first Open University of India, Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), set up in 1982, is also in the city of Hyderabad.
Most of the universities and the institutes in Hyderabad conduct their own entrance exams and accept national level entrance exams too for admissions to their programmes. Following are the main entrance exams that need to be taken for admission to various colleges and universities in Hyderabad:
The Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) is conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Hyderabad on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) for admission to undergraduate programs (B.Tech, B.E, B.Sc) in Andhra Pradesh universities, private unaided colleges and affiliated professional colleges.
The Engineering Common Entrance Test (ECET) is conducted by JNT University Kakinada on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) for Diploma Holders and B.Sc.(Mathematics) degree holders for admission to B.E. or B.Tech. or B.Pharmacy programmes offered by JNTU as well as AICTE/ PCI approved institutions in Andhra Pradesh.
The Post-Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test (PGECET) evaluates candidates for admission to postgraduate courses in engineering, architecture, technology and pharmacy. PGECET is conducted by Osmania University on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE). Several colleges in Hyderabad accept the PGECET score.
The Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) in Andhra Pradesh is held for admission into postgraduate management and computer application programs (i.e. MBA and MCA programs) offered by all 23 universities and their affiliated colleges in Andhra Pradesh. The administering authority for ICET is a different university every year that conducts the exam on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE). The well known Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) in Hyderabad accepts ICET scores for admission to its MBA and PGDM programs.
LAWCET & PGLCET
The Law Common Entrance Test (LAWCET) and PG LAW Common Entrance Test (PGLCET) is conducted by the Department of Law, Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) for admission to the 3 year/ 5 year LL.B / B.L & LL.M. regular & self-financing courses offered by law colleges in Andhra Pradesh.
The Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) is a standardized examination of what you have studied in college and your ability to complete rigorous coursework in a business school. Many management schools in India accept applications on the basis of GMAT percentile and shortlist candidates for Group Discussion and Personal Interview for management admission. The Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad (whose PG programme was ranked #20 in the world in the 2012 Financial Times Global MBA Rankings) also accepts GMAT scores for admissions.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is among the toughest MBA entrance exam that needs to be taken to qualify for admission to post graduate management programmes offered by well-known management institutes in Hyderabad like Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management (VJIM), Dhruva College of Management and Siva Sivani Institute of Management (SSIM).
